Zygote Journal Online Magazine

The nexus of science and design in the field of biologically inspired design, using case studies, news and articles.

Their mission is to establish a credible platform showcasing the nexus of science and design in the field of biologically inspired design, using case studies, news and articles that are exemplary in their impact on the field, rigorous in their methodology, and relevant to today’s reader.

The inaugural issue of ZQ was officially launched on March 23 in 2012 through a wide range of channels, including LinkedIn groups, mailing lists, BioInspired sites, and e-mails to key opinion leaders and an early Biomimicry Newsletter distribution list.

The journey began on July 29/2011 when Marjan Eggermont suggested starting an online Biomimicry Journal, modeled on her Journal of Computational Media Design. The foundation of their enterprise in their own words: "we wanted a visually exciting and credible quarterly journal that showcased the nexus of science and design, appealed to designers as problem solvers, and would attract the interest of key people in the field of biomimicry and bio-inspired design."  Articles would be exemplary in their impact on the field, rigorous in their methodology and relevant to today’s reader.  These initial ideas carried through to the final manifesto published in the first issue.

Zygote Quarterly is a richly illustrated journal edited by biomimicry practitioners and educators. Today is available in english and spanish.
